A man tried to suffocate his partner in their Fife home with his hands – and then six weeks later, repeated his attempt using a pillow-case.

Brandon MacMillan stuffed the item into the woman's mouth and told her "just go to sleep" and pinched her nose to restrict her breathing further.

When MacMillan appeared for sentence at Inverness Sheriff Court, he was jailed for two years by Sheriff Gary Aitken.

The attack in a holiday caravan in Nairn's Lochloy caravan park on May 31, 2022 lasted almost a minute following an argument which continued for an hour-and-a-half.

Fiscal depute Robert Weir told the court: "She said she was going to call the police. He said he would have a stand-off with police and would kill her and himself."

The sheriff heard that MacMillan's partner then ran from the caravan screaming: "Please help me."

The first attack was in the couple's home in Mackie Avenue, Leven on April 13, 2022.

They had had an argument and as she tried to walk out, he stood in front of her.

"She attempted to make a call to police but he grabbed her phone. Then he grabbed her hair from the back and dragged her into a bedroom.

"She was crying in pain from her hair being pulled and asked him to stop. He put his other hand over her mouth and nose whilst continuing to pull her hair."

Mr Weir said she scratched his face and managed to escape and police officers, who had been contacted, saw a clump of hair fall from her head.

MacMillan admitted two charges of assault to injury and one of threatening or abusive behaviour.
