A sharp-eyed walker on Nairn beach raised the alarm after spotting what looked like an unexploded bomb in the sands.

HM Coastguard received a call from a concerned member of the public on Thursday morning, quickly cordoning off a section of the beach.

Royal Navy disposal experts attended and found the piece of ordnance was used and harmless.

A spokesman for HM Maritime and Coastguard said: “At around 9.22am yesterday (January 2) HM Coastguard received a report of a potential ordnance on Nairn Beach.

“Nairn coastguard rescue team located the ordnance and established a cordon.

“An explosive ordnance disposal team attended, confirmed that the ordnance was spent, and removed it.”

Nairn’s famous beaches and other stretches of nearby coast were used for military training during World War Two.

War-time exercises carried out in the area included those for the D-Day Landings in 1944.
