Pupils at Nairn Academy will have the opportunity to benefit from a Careers and Learner Pathways seminar at the Academy on Wednesday, February 15 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

After the disruption of the past two years the school is to relaunch its previously highly successful event where students and parents will have the chance to meet representatives from a wide range of industry sectors, potential employers, education providers and support organisations to help them source information regarding their future plans.

David Hay, a supply teacher at the school who spent many years as a guidance teacher and faculty head at Nairn Academy is organising the event with Sarah Abenheimer (depute rector) and Sam Todd (acting depute rector). They are assisted by Debbie Khadi, Developing Young Workforce co-ordinator, who works with and supports pupils in planning their route to employment or continuing education.

“We are circulating employers, support organisations and education providers who have previously attended along with others who may wish to attend. At present over 40 have confirmed their attendance at the event. Those attending will have access to the school from 5pm to set up, and light refreshments will be available for them.

“In the past the event was always well attended by pupils and their parents. Unfortunately, we have not been able to stage the event for two years due to Covid and more than ever the pupils and parents may need guidance and reassurance to help them plan their route to positive destinations.”

“The event coincides with the Course Planning process when all pupils in S2 and above are selecting school subjects and thinking about possible future educational and career prospects. This should result in maximum uptake from all year groups. It is clear from feedback from previous events that the opportunity to meet representatives from a wide range of education or training providers and employers is found to be helpful and is valued by pupils and parents.”

Mr Hay added: “We have had a lot of positive feedback in the past from these evenings and I am sure the pupils and their families are looking forward to its resumption. They feel supported by the school and also by the employers, industries, education and training providers and support organisations who give their time willingly to help them reach important decisions.”

The school is keen to recruit any additional employers who wish to contribute. For further information contact david.hay@highland.gov.uk
