Mystery surrounds the future of an Inverness post office which has been closed for two days.

The shutters have been firmly closed at Hilton Post Office in Tomatin Road.

It is understood the branch has been run by a temporary operator and it is currently being advertised in the hope that another local retailer will be interested in running it.

A Post Office spokesman confirmed it had been closed due to "unforeseen circumstances".

He added: "We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services and we sincerely apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Hilton Post Office.

“Unfortunately, from time to time, Post Office branches do temporarily close for reasons beyond our control.

"We would like to reassure customers that we are committed to providing Post Office services in the area.

"We are seeking a new partner to take on the Post Office, so local retailers interested in this business opportunity should contact us on 0845 2668790 and talk to an advisor or email ND.enquiries@postoffice.co.uk or visit www.runapostoffice.co.uk.

“During the temporary closure customers can access Post Office services at any other convenient branch including Crown, Inverness and Inshes Post Offices.”
