TWO super-fit young men are nearing the end of a mega-run down through the Highlands that involved doing a marathon-a-day to raise funds for charities providing vital support to families hit by cancer.

Under the name The Tartaneers, the Edinburgh duo, Charlie Brett (22) and Toby Gray (18) set off from Torrisdale on the north coast to run a marathon each day until reaching home 12 days and 314.4 miles later.

Their Highlands2Home challenge will involve 26.2 miles each day, taking in Inverness, Aviemore, and Perth then home to Edinburgh on June 26.

“The challenge is in memory of all our loved ones who have been taken by cancer and for families everywhere whose lives have been impacted by the disease,” Mr Brett said.

“We’ve discovered a new-found passion to push ourselves beyond the limits for a cause bigger than ourselves.”

This isn’t the first gruelling fundraising effort taken on by The Tartaneers. Last year they completed a demanding 24-hour challenge comprising a 2km row, 3km run, and 10km cycle every hour on the hour – raising an astounding £24,000 for Cancer Research.

“We have a mindset of pushing ourselves and never settling,” said Mr Gray. “The hard work we’re putting in is nothing compared to those suffering. That’s why we’re proud to have this opportunity to help make a difference.”

Money raised will go to Make 2nds Count, a family-focused charity helping people living with secondary cancer, and Marie Curie the country’s leading cancer support charity.

Make 2nds Count founder Lisa Fleming said it was amazing.
