A survey to collect data on the experiences of consumers in requesting credit withdrawals from their energy suppliers has been launched.

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey MP Drew Hendry's It's Your Money campaign also looks at direct debit payments.

The survey aims to identify the scale of the issue and gather information on the difficulties that consumers face when trying to access their money being held in energy suppliers’ accounts.

The results of the survey precede a Westminster debate, which Mr Hendry has secured, for tomorrow.

MPs from all parties will attend the debate, which will be an opportunity to discuss the matter further and make their constituents' voices heard, while also hearing from the energy minister.

Mr Hendry believes that energy suppliers must be more transparent and customer-focused and allow customers to access their money where large balances have been accrued.

All responses to the survey will be treated confidentially.

Mr Hendry said: “Folk in the Highlands are already in the position of paying more for energy produced on our doorstep. Add to that the colder climate and rural communities, and you can see why people are struggling with energy bills.

“Because of this and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, it is more important than ever that energy suppliers do their part to alleviate the financial burden on their customers.

"I am eager to hear from consumers and learn about their experiences in requesting credit withdrawals from energy suppliers and having their direct debit payments hiked.

“I have already heard from many people who have been affected by this issue, one being denied access to a credit balance of over £1000 while still having their monthly payment amount increased.

“This is not a party-political issue – even government ministers have agreed with me that this cannot be allowed to go on.

“Energy companies have a moral duty to look after their customers, especially right now. The results of this survey will help us to take the necessary steps to ensure that energy providers are doing just that."
