INVERNESS MP Drew Hendry expressed disappointment after meeting the UK immigration minister to discuss embattled city couple Russell and Ellen Felber.

Mr Hendry met with Robert Goodwill on Wednesday to press the case of the American guest house owners whose application for permanent UK residence was turned down before Christmas.

The couple maintain immigration goalposts were changed only after they completed the process and Mr Hendry had hoped officials would “see sense” at the meeting.

“Instead, there is an unmoving refusal to accept that changes to Home Office guidance and application forms were made after Russell and Ellen submitted their application,” he said.

“We’re going to keep pressing the Felbers’ case and the public support for the couple is very important.

“In the meantime, my office and I will continue to support Ellen and Russell and their solicitor, and work to change the attitude of the UK government on this matter.”

Mr Felber admitted news of the unsuccessful meeting had come as a blow.

He added: “Ultimately we are still heading down the road towards a judicial review and we still have the support of friends, which keeps us going.”

An online petition in support of the Felbers has so far gathered more than 1300 signatures. To sign go to http://bit.ly/2iAinNt
