Nairn music lovers are set for a journey through time as an acclaimed wind ensemble is set to visit the town.

The Wind Octet of The Orchestra of Scottish Opera will perform this Saturday at Nairn Community & Arts Centre as part of the Music Nairn concert series.

The Principal Winds of the Orchestra of Scottish Opera will perform a programme of 18th to 21st century music which they say promises “an instrumental cast of exuberant revellers, serenading lovers and the dangerous game of chance in a journey from field to table to stage!”.

Gary Carpenter’s ‘Musical Snooker Game’ is based on the Musical Dice Game invented by Mozart, himself an expert billiards player. Also inspired by Mozart is Jonathan Dove’s piece designed to precede a Glyndebourne production of ‘Figaro’.

The concert will also feature a Wind Octet by Vaughan Williams pupil Ruth Gipps and Scottish composer Colin Suckling’s suite of musical cures for everyday maladies, The Medicinal Herb Garden.

Other highlights of Music Nairn’s 2023/24 concert series which runs into May, include Engegård String Quartet (April 20) and the RSNO Piano Quartet (May 19).

Tickets for the concert – which will start at 7.30pm, are available at the centre (£18 general admission, £3 for under-26).
