You have to be pretty upset if you stage a protest against your local council in the early hours of Christmas morning
Yet that is exactly what has happened at Inverness Town House where members of Highland Council were labelled “Clowncillors.”
Someone or some group appears to have felt strongly enough about the state of the north’s potholed roads that they made their feelings clear in the early hours of Christmas morning.
On the steps to the main entrance, apparently quite neatly arranged are what remains of metal coil springs belonging to a car suspension – probably more than one vehicle.
They wrote in chalk on one step: “You destroyed suspension” then on the next one down “springs & brake callipers” while the phrase “Clowncillors [sic]” took up its own step and finally: “Destroyers of life & limb & vehicles.”
For years the council has been fighting a losing battle to maintain its roads and despite a recent increase in investment, on plant as well as repairs many are still unhappy.
Added to that are fears that amid the financial crisis the local authority is enduring the roads budget is about to slashed by more than half to just £9 million a year.
