MOTORISTS in Inverness could face days of disruption after plans emerged to close the Millburn level crossing in the city for three days.

The crossing will be closed from midday on Saturday until 6am on Tuesday, Highland Council has confirmed.

A spokeswoman said: "The closure is to enable essential maintenance being carried out by Network Rail.

"Advance notification signs have been erected as a warning to all motorists.

"Local businesses have been informed of the impending closure."

The level crossing is located on Harbour Road, next to the junction with Millburn Road, on one of the main access routes to and from the Longman Industrial Estate.

The last time it was closed to traffic was due to faulty barriers in July. On that occasion the closure brought gridlock to many parts of the city, with displaced motorists causing serious congestion elsewhere as they tried to find alternate routes around the bottleneck.

Some drivers caught up in the congestion reported that a 15-mile commute into Inverness had taken 90 minutes because of the disruption. Another said that a 20 minute drive had taken more than double that time to complete.
