Inverness mother reported drunk son to police in order to get him help

A mother informed police about her son who got drunk and was being disruptive in her home.

But Inverness Sheriff Court heard that it was concern for her son's safety and welfare on December 3 last year that prompted her to report 24-year-old Nathan Cowie of Westford, Alness, so he would get help, not necessarily punishment.

Fiscal depute David Barclay told Sheriff Sara Matheson that he had spoken to Cowie's mother and brother who were present when Cowie overturned a table and threatened self harm in the property in St Fergus Drive, Inverness.

He said the pair felt Cowie needed to be brought to court to get help.

Mr Barclay added: "He had been drinking and apparently doesn't react well to alcohol."

Defence solicitor David Patterson said his client, who admitted threatening or abusive behaviour, was currently on an order where he was getting help and support for his issues.

Sheriff Matheson decided to fine Cowie £280 and told him: "Try and think about what you are doing with your life and stay off alcohol."
