A PLANNING application for a multi-million pound development to create a new bowling alley at an Inverness shopping centre have been objected by more than 120 people on the planning website.

Earlier this week, members and staff of Everlast gym at Inverness Shopping Park raised their concerns as they fear they will lose a 'lifeline' service as well as a community hub if plans for a new bowling alley and entertainment facilities will go ahead.

After meeting with some of the members and staff at the gym, Culloden and Ardersier councillor Trish Robertson said it's important to consider the community in making decisions over this proposed planning application.

She said: "The community that has built up around this gym is a social experience for many who would otherwise be alone.

"The facility is well used by all age groups and it would be a huge loss to see this close.

"It is a commercial decision taken by the owners and I would wish they would consider the community when making a decision on whether this new plan is the best way forward."

The gym and Sports Direct which are currently in the building are owned by Frasers Group, who have a temporary lease on the premises at the moment, however they said they do not wish to comment on the matter at this time.

British Land, which owns Hercules Unit Trust and Inverness Shopping Park, is seeking to bring forward a multi-million pound plan to create a new 10-pin bowling centre and inflatable activity course with associated café and amusements on the first floor.

Commenting on the recent objections presented online to the planning application, a British Land spokesperson said: "British Land continually reviews its retail and leisure mix to ensure it reflects visitor demand and market trends.

"Following the administration of the original gym operator DW Sports and subsequent occupation by Sports Direct’s Everlast gym on a temporary basis, we have submitted exciting plans to convert the unit into a tenpin bowling alley and an inflatable adventure zone."
