TWO applications for new homes are being considered by Highland Council.

Cairn Housing Association wants to build 24 “affordable” mixed type residential units on a gap site at Willow Avenue in Slackbuie, while Highland Council want to build six council flats at a gap site in Craigton Avenue in Merkinch.

Cairn says in its planning statement that the Slackbuie site was bought from Tulloch Homes in 2008/09, but was delayed due to the recession and lack of access until the link road was completed.

There is a strong preference for houses to create a “robust frontage onto the spine road through the site and access to open space.”

The site is within an area of established residential properties and ongoing residential development consented or under construction and will benefit from being an integral part of this emerging neighbourhood, says Cairn.

It is a steep sloping site, but Cairn adds: “Whilst presenting both design and construction challenges, it also presents an opportunity to maximise views out of the site from a number of plots, and serve to create interesting and varied streetscapes.”

A public art entrance feature will be created at the site access.

The Craigton Avenue site was previously occupied by flats and a council office, now demolished. The site has existing houses to either side.

The proposal is for six one-bedroom cottage flats in two separate buildings. The flats will face the street and will each have a private entrance to the front and private rear garden.
