A YELLOW weather warning has come into force for snow in the Highlands.

The Met Office warning took effect at 3pm and will remain in place until 10am tomorrow.

Forecasters believe most of the snow will be confined to hills and mountains, where between 4 and 8cm is possible on areas above 200 metres. Accumulations of up to 15cm are also possible at higher levels.

However, they warn that snow could also fall at sea level in some areas.

"A band of rain spreading slowly in will turn to snow as it encounters cold air," said a spokesman for the Met Office. "Whilst this will be mainly on high ground, and heavier bursts could easily bring snow down to low levels."

"Please be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions in some areas."
