THE Met Office has issued a yellow warning for heavy snow and sleet in the Inverness area for today.

The warning was issued shortly after 9am. It will remain in force until 7am on Saturday.

It warns of heavy snow above 150 metres, with sleet more likely in lower areas, although, as of writing, heavy snow was falling at sea level in Inverness.

A Met Office spokesman said: "A spell of rain, sleet and snow will move south-east across Scotland during Friday.

"This is likely to fall as rain or sleet at lower levels, however falling as snow above 150 metres with accumulatiosn to 2-5 centimetres on higher routes, particularly the higher roads of Moray and Grampian.

"This will then be followed by scattered, wintry showers moving in fromt the north and these could also bring further snow accumulations, even to lower levels.

"The public should be aware of continued difficult driving conditions and the possibility of localised travel disruption."

Roads to the south of the Highland Capital have also been hit by snow, with council gritters encountering snow up to four inches deep on some minor routes, a council spokeswoman said shortly after 10am.
