TORRENTIAL rain is expected to drench the area for part of Hogmanay, the Met Office has warned.

It has issued a yellow weather warning for the north-west Highlands. The warning, which comes into force in the early hours of Saturday and runs until 6pm the same day, affects an area that includes the Black Isle and Beauly Firth.

Between 30mm and 50mm of rain is expected widely, with peaks of 80mm in more mountainous spots.

"Outbreaks of rain will turn heavier across north-west Scotland on Friday night and last well into Saturday," said a spokesman.

"Standing water and spray in combinaton with strong to gale force winds will bring difficult driving conditions, while localised flooding may lead to some low level travel disruption.

"The rain will gradually clear south during the afternoon."
