A YELLOW weather warning for ice will come into force later today.

The Met Office is warning that temperatures will fall sharply across the Highlands later this afternoon and overnight and that this could lead to hazardous driving conditions following recent heavy showers.

“It will be a cold night across much of northern Scotland tonight. Temperatures will fall this evening bringing an ice risk after today’s heavy showers,” said a spokesman. “A slight warming within a more organised spell of rain, sleet, and some temporary snow above 100-200 metres, will move in to central parts this evening before moving south. Several centimetres of snow may accumulate over higher ground, with the level varying with time, but the main hazard is expected to be ice forming on untreated surfaces - the ice risk increases again after midnight as temperatures fall under clearing skies.

“The public should be aware of the risk of some difficult driving conditions.”

The yellow warning will come into force at 5pm today and will remain in effect until 10am on Saturday.
