The mental health charity Centred has contributed to a debate in Scottish Parliament on mental health stigma in the workplace, submitted by Highland MSP Emma Roddick.

Centred provides care and support to individuals experiencing mental ill-health, and has recently launched research looking at mental health in the Highlands.

Its Mental Health: Exploring the Current Landscape report found that more than half of people with a mental health condition have experienced stigma and discrimination. The charity called for more research to understand the impact of mental health stigma, and for more to be done to end it.

Dr Clare Daly, head of communications and research at Centred, said: “We are grateful to Emma Roddick MSP and the Scottish Parliament for highlighting the critical issue of stigma for people experiencing mental ill-health.

“We at Centred believe in the potential that every person has to live a fulfilling and meaningful life, and hope this debate will start to lead to positive change with regards to stigma in the workplace”.

Ms Roddick said: “Stigma in the workplace, particularly for severe and enduring mental illness, is still a massive issue.”
