MEN are being urged to ditch their razors in an annual fundraising challenge to improve the experience of children in hospital.

The Archie Foundation is inviting people to get involved in its annual Beards for Bairns campaign which sees men grow or style a beard from Christmas Day to Burns Night.

Nurse Darren Pentecost, of the Highland Children’s Unit at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, has taken up the challenge after being nominated by young patient Kenzie Stewart.

“I’ve already got a beard but I’m sure I can do something a bit wacky with it,” he said. “It’s to raise money for charity of course, so how could I refuse?

“I might try and grow it as long as I can. Maybe down to my knees – but I’ve only got a month so I’ll see how I get on.”

He is encouraging other men across the Highlands to get involved.

“What better way to help fund raise than simply growing a Beards for Bairns?” he said.

“It shows small ways to fund raise can help make a big difference to young people who will benefit from specialist child-friendly spaces.”

People can nominate men to take part and if they choose to accept their nominator is asked to kick start their fundraising. If the nominee declines, they are asked to donate to the Archie Foundation as a forfeit.
