A RENOWNED choir is making stops at landmark venues in Strathpeffer, Elgin and Inverness as part of an eagerly anticipated tour that set to boost good causes while delighting audiences.

The 55-member Glasgow Phoenix Choir, which boasts a 123-year history, starts a three day tour on Friday with a concert at Strathpeffer Pavilion at 8pm.

They will then head to Elgin for a Saturday matinee in St Giles Church at 2.30pm.

The choir's final stop is for a 2.30pm performance on Sunday, September 24 at Ness Bank Church, a charity concert in aid of Marie Curie.

The Inverness concert is in memory of May Storrie CBE, a patron of both Marie Curie and The

The choir is directed by conductor Cameron Murdoch and will be accompanied by award-winning organist, Matthew McIlree.

Vonnie Stevenson, a community fundraiser, explained more about the Inverness event: “The Glasgow Phoenix Choir last performed here pre-pandemic at Inverness Cathedral, again raising funds for Marie Curie to a sell-out audience. We then planned a concert in 2021 but it was postponed until now.

“I was the Marie Curie fundraiser previously but this time just organising it as a charity supporter along with the help of the local Inverness fundraising group. The event is sponsored by local businessman Willie Gray of Ark Estates.”

She added: “May Storrie died in May this year in the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow. She was a patron of both Marie Curie in Scotland and Glasgow Phoenix Choir. Although based in Glasgow May's reach and contagious energy were well-known up here in the Highlands where she worked closely with the Marie Curie patrons, employees and supporters in sharing ideas and hosting events.

“Her experience of hosting the annual Art for Care exhibition in Glasgow was key to the success of the online Marie Curie Art Auction which myself and a small committee organised, an event that managed to raise an incredible £78,000 in 2021.

“Along with her late husband Donald they were key in funding the £16 million to fund the new Glasgow Marie Curie, a charity so close to their hearts.

“May received her CBE in 2015 for her outstanding work in both business and charity. She was also very proud to become the first female Lord Dean of Guild in over 400 years.”
