Retailer Matalan has declared its priority is to protect staff and customers after the reopening of its Inverness store was criticised by city MP Drew Hendry.

The outlet at Inshes Retail Park – where several other businesses are operating including Tesco, McDonald's and Dunelm – was temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic until yesterday.

A Matalan spokeswoman said: “Following the change in government guidance on May 29 to include homeware as essential retail, Matalan, as a clothing and homeware retailer with a significant homeware business, has been preparing carefully for a safe and phased reopening of specific stores in Scotland following the successful reopening of a number of stores in England and Northern Ireland in recent weeks. Our priority is to protect both our colleagues' and our customers’ safety in every store.”
