A thief with a bad record for dishonesty was jailed for six months at Inverness Sheriff Court after admitting stealing £299 worth of food from Marks and Spencer's in the city.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank heard that 47 year old Donald McPhee of Benula Road, Inverness had carried out the shoplifting offence on March 13, 2023 to buy drugs.

Defending, Rory Gowans told the court: "He has very little recollection of the offence as he had a relapse and it was to fund his addiction.

"He is now free from all illicit substances."

His sentence was backdated to October 12 when he was remanded in custody after failing to appear at court for sentencing.
