Sentence had previously been deferred at Inverness Sheriff Court to allow the accused to get social work assistance.

Defence solicitor Duncan Henderson told Sheriff Gary Aitken today that Ryan Hempkin (28) was also engaging well with mental health services and had not drunk alcohol since last December.

The court was told that Hempkin, of St Ninian's Drive, Inverness was in the Private Eyes venue in the city's Academy Street on November 8 last year when a steward was called to throw the father of two out due to his behaviour.

Fiscal depute Karen Poke said: "He lashed out and punched the steward on the face.

"A struggle began and both ended up on the floor when he (Hempkin) made an attempt to bite him."

Mr Allison said police were called and, while being escorted to the police van, Hempkin attempted to bite one of the constables on the upper leg.

"He continued to be uncooperative in Burnett Road Police Station," Mr Allison said.

Hempkin admitted assault and threatening behaviour.

Defence solicitor Duncan Henderson explained that, at the time, his client had been mixing alcohol with his medication for mental health problems.

He added: "The death of his brother-in-law appears to have been the trigger.

"His brother is a police constable and my client is fully aware that his behaviour reflects badly on the rest of his family."

Sheriff Aitken said he was pleased that Hempkin was getting help with his issues and added: "I trust we will never see you back in a criminal court again."
