A man who downloaded over 500 indecent images of children in an 18-month period has been ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard David Mitchell (32), whose address on court papers was given as Hillhead Road, Tornagrain, had 104 images of the most graphic kind.

He previously admitted downloading the material between March 8, 2019 and September 24, 2020, with sentence deferred for a background report.

Fiscal depute Robert Weir told the court the National Child Abuse Unit received information that the IP address belonging to Mitchell had accessed the images.

A search warrant was obtained and his phone was seized.

A total of 589 images were found.

As well as the unpaid work order first offender Mitchell was also placed under two years of social work supervision and was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the same period.
