A man lashed out with scissors after a Good Samaritan went to help another man outside the Nip Inn in Inverness

Kyle Drummond (20) appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court from custody having been remanded for reports following an earlier appearance when he admitted punching one man in the head and stabbing another with a pair of scissors outside the pub in Grant Street.

Previously the court had heard how Darren Taylor went to help a neighbour following a disturbance outside the pub on June 23.

Depute fiscal David Morton told Sheriff Margaret Neilson that Drummond, who had already punched his first victim, stepped towards Mr Taylor and struck him with scissors to his stomach, inflicting a superficial one-inch cut.

Detained by police he went on to assault a custody officer at Burnett Road police station by spitting on her through a cell hatch.

Drummond had been placed on a community payback order for the assault in the police station but that was revoked for non-compliance with the order.

Solicitor Clare Russell said Drummond was single and unemployed but now had the support of his family who were willing to pay rent for accommodation were he to be given his liberty.

"He acknowledges some responsibility for his conduct when he is under the influence of substances which affect his behaviour," she said.

However she also admitted: "There is a lack of willingness to comply with support offered to him."

Sheriff Neilson said the charges were very serious and sentenced him to two years for the assaults in Grant Street and six months for the assault in the police station, to run concurrently.
