A fight between two men in Inverness city centre resulted in one of them being bitten on the thumb.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that the April 9, 2022 incident was in Academy Street when 37-year-old Ian Stewart reacted to a comment made to a woman he was with.

Sheriff Sara Matheson was told that there was an argument which escalated resulting in the man being struck on the head a few times.

While both men were on the ground, Stewart bit the man's thumb which was bleeding.

The court heard that Stewart's victim refused medical attention but went to hospital days after and had it X-rayed to reveal a fracture.

Sheriff Matheson sentenced Stewart, of North Kessock, to a restriction of liberty order for the next four months during which he must wear an electronic tag.

He was also placed under 18 months of social work supervision.

She told him: "This was a nasty assault. If there is a breach of this order which is an alternative to a custodial sentence you will be brought back here and the likely outcome will be prison."
