A man has been arrested and charged following a miracle escape when his car was hit by a train on a level crossing outside Inverness.

The 49-year-old was involved in the crash at the Lower Cullernie level crossing at Allanfearn just after 1.30pm on Tuesday.

The line between Inverness and Nairn had to be shut for several hours due to the collision.

A police spokesman said: “Officers were called to a level crossing near Inverness at 1.36pm on 31 January after reports that a car had been struck by a train. Thankfully no one was injured.

"No trains ran through the location while the vehicle was recovered and the line assessed.

"A 49-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and has since been charged.”
