Police Scotland confirmed a man has been arrested after an alleged incident yesterday in Inverness.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested and detained in Inverness after an 11-year-old girl was allegedly approached in Smithton.

Concerns were voiced on social media after rumours that a man tried to arrange a meeting with the youngster "for sex" yesterday evening, but was confronted by an adult relative of the girl.

Highlands and Islands Police Division's Facebook page said Inverness police were made aware of an incident "where an image of a male was circulated via social media on a non-police page."

The post added: "We can confirm the male has been identified and traced. We thank the public for their assistance."

A Police Scotland spokesperson clarified: “Police Scotland can confirm that on Tuesday, 21 April, 2020, a 30 year old man was arrested and remains in custody in Inverness following an incident reported to Police last night involving a young female.

“Enquiries are ongoing at this stage.”

The incident created anger and alarm on social media with a number of people seeking clarification on the police Facebook page as to whether the man had been arrested.
