Some parts of the event due to take place today will still take place as organisers cite health and safety concerns for the cancellation.
A post on the Glenurquhart Highland Games Loch Ness Facebook page states: "Due to health and safety, including road traffic management concerns we have regrettably taken the decision to cancel the majority of the 2023 Glenurquhart Highland Games."
The cancellation comes despite volunteers working through heavy rain yesterday to get the field set up for today's event.
Among events still taking place according to organisers the funfair will be open from noon-5pm; the shinty bar and live music event planned for Blarbeg Hall from noon-11.30pm will also proceed (under 18s welcome with an adult until 9pm).
The Inverness Royal British Legion Pipe Band will also play in the village hall from 1pm.
The Glen Challenge is also still taking place.
Track and field events, the piping competition and all heavy events have been cancelled.
People have been sharing their sympathies with organisers.
On Facebook Kirsteen Ball said: "So sorry to hear that, hard for everyone who has put so much into the day and hope it's still a good day for the bits still on."
Jodii Johnson said: "Wouldn't be an enjoyable day in the rain. Feel sorry for those who have spent so much time setting up and now taking down. Great British Summer."
