A MAJOR fire has gutted the building housing retailer M&Co in the heart of Inverness.

The fire started late on Wednesday evening, sparking a large-scale response from the emergency services.

The area immediately around the blaze, on the corner of Strothers Lane and Academy Street, was cordoned off while firefighters tackled it. The fire has completely destroyed the roof of the building. It is not yet known what damage, if any, has been caused to neighbouring properties.

The streets remain closed while fire crews damp down the flames.

"Members of the public are advised that Academy Street, Church Street, Union Street, Bank Steet and Falcon Square areas are currently closed to allow emergency services access to the scene.

"Police advise members of the public to avoid the city centre area until further notice."
