A YOUNGSTER from Kiltarlity gave up his birthday presents to help pay for meals for children living in poverty.

Noah Wright (5) decided, for the second year in a row, to hold a birthday party and instead of getting gifts for himself, he sought donations to the charity Mary’s Meals.

The Inverness-shire youngster managed to raise enough money to feed five children for a full year. Last year he managed to raise enough money to feed four children. Noah’s mum Basia Wright said she was very proud.

She said: “Last year we watched the Mary’s Meals film Child 31 together, and Noah was really inspired by it.

“As a family we already support Mary’s Meals where we can. We spoke about the film and Noah said he wanted to do something himself.

“He thought about it, and said that instead of presents, he would ask people to come to his party and make a donation to Mary’s Meals.”

Noah told his mum he had enough toys and he “didn’t need any more”.

Mrs Wright continued: “Basically the idea is that children in this country have so many toys and children on the other side of the world don’t have very much at all.

“It seemed to Noah that giving to the Mary’s Meals charity seemed like the right thing to do.”

The family sent the money raised by Noah and his friends to the charity.

It costs £15.90 to feed a child for a year. Mary’s Meals works in 18 countries and feeds more than 1.6 million children in their place of education. The Scottish charity was founded in 1992 in Scotland by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow.

Commenting on Noah’s efforts, Gillian McMahon, UK director of supporter engagement and income at Mary’s Meals, said: “We are very grateful to Noah for his donation, which will feed nine hungry children every school day for a year.

“Our work would not be possible without superstar supporters like Noah who, even at such a young age, are inspired to make a difference. For more information about Mary’s Meals, visit marysmeals.org.uk”
