Nairn Academy has been celebrating a major milestone of service by one of its employees as Davie Hay marked 40 years with the school.

During that time he has worked across a number of departments including chemistry, guidance, technology and latterly chemistry/biology.

“Today is my 40th anniversary of starting at Nairn Academy,” he said. “Most of the time it seems just like yesterday – how time flies when you are enjoying yourself!

“I’ve been in the school today with helium balloons, a ruby wedding sash and a 40-today badge attached to my person. The senior management team at the school have been determined to make it a memorable day for me.”

Davie was also inundated with messages of goodwill on Facebook from former pupils who remembered with affection his chemistry classes using helium balloons.

Head teacher Julie Macdonald said he was a driving force behind the school’s initial rural skills course 12 years ago.

“He has always volunteered to support whole school events with a particular expertise in our stage lighting and sound for awards and talent shows,” she said.

“Even with his retirement four years ago, Davie has continued to support the school as a supply teacher.

“His support of pupils and staff has been very much appreciated over the years. Dedicating 40 years to Nairn Academy is a significant achievement which the Nairn Academy community wanted to mark and send our thanks and congratulations.

“As well as presenting Davie with a few gifts, he was also able to have a trip down memory lane having a read through the school daily logbook from 1981-82 school year.”

Highland Council’s education committee chairman John Finlayson congratulated Davie.

“The legacy of pupils that he has taught must be remarkable.”
