DECADES old gym equipment has been consigned to the past at Hilton Primary School thanks to a £1000 lottery grant.

The school was awarded the cash to improve its gym equipment, which will be used by the Breakfast Gymnastics Club and school gym classes.

The school’s morning club runs before school at 8.15am two mornings per week and is very popular with the pupils says deputy head Margaret Lisle.

“We’re so delighted with the new equipment we’ve been able to buy with the money from the grant,” she said. “Most of our equipment was as old as the school and that’s 60 years old!”

The school was able to use the cash to buy a trampet mini trampoline, spring board, balance benches, vaulting boxes and new mats.

“Each year group has a four-week gymnastics course as part of PE, so the equipment is well used,” Ms Lisle explained.

“We’re all so excited about the new equipment, we even have a wonderful roll-out mat which is great for us as one of our main issues is storage space and the mat rolls up nicely and fits in the cupboard.”

The extra gymnastics club is possible thanks to parent helpers and gymnast Alana Munroe.

The children are given additional lessons which are free to attend for all of those in the school in primary two and above.

“We couldn’t run the gymnastics club without the parent helpers” said Ms Lisle. “We need them for numbers and we’re always looking for more.”
