TRAIN passengers travelling from Inverness to Glasgow will face longer journeys when major works at Queen Street Station Tunnel start in March.
Part of the busy Glasgow train station will close for the £60million upgrade, which will mean trips between the Highland capital and Glasgow will take 30 to 40 minutes longer, ScotRail have confirmed.
Because north trains will terminate at Glasgow Central from March 20 until August 8, they will take a different route after Stirling, leading to the longer travel times.
But in some cases, Inverness travellers could score if they are planning to continue their train journey further south.
At present Inverness trains arrive at Queen Street, with travellers then having to make the 10-minute walk or hire a cab to transfer to Glasgow’s Central Station to catch a train south.
ScotRail confirmed that all direct Inverness-Glasgow services will go to/from Central Station during the 20-week closure of the Glasgow Queen Street Tunnel.
Queen Street’s low level line will remain open during the works, with only the high level affected.
Trains from Fort William will also be affected by the works with journeys taking 25 minutes longer.
Customers are encouraged to check their individual journey at scotrail.co.uk/QueenStreetTunnel.
The Queen Street Tunnel work will allow engineers to replace 1.2 miles of track and electrify the route aswell as preparing the way for faster, longer and more environmentally friendly trains according to ScotRail.
