A 21-year-old man who punched and kicked his victim on the head was told he could have killed him.

Lewis Hart, of Walker Crescent, Inverness appeared at the city's sheriff court and admitted the assault in Lombard Street on April 16 last year.

Sheriff Gary Aitken was told that the early morning encounter was the second time the pair had met.

But on this occasion, Hart was the target of "some sort of comment", fiscal depute Victoria Silver said.

"CCTV filmed him running up behind the complainer and punching him on the face," she said. "He then kicked him on the head once, knocking him unconscious. He required five butterfly stitches to above the eyebrow."

Fining Hart £1040, Sheriff Aitken told him: "Kicking people on the head can kill them. You are lucky this is not worse than it was. Whatever he said to you, there is no excuse for this."
