Inverness MP Drew Hendry has been appointed Economy spokesperson in a reshuffle of the SNP's frontbench team at Westminster.

It comes as the party ramps up preparations ahead of a general election which is expected next year.

SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn said his team will pile pressure on the UK government to help families with the cost of living, while renewing the positive case for independence in Europe, and investment in Scotland’s enormous renewable energy potential, as the best route to securing strong and sustained economic growth.

Mr Hendry has served as MP Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey since 2015. He has been SNP Foreign Affairs spokesperson since December 2022.

Mr Hendry said: "As I step into the role of Economy spokesperson for the SNP Westminster Group, I'd like to sincerely thank my colleague Stewart Hosie for his excellent work in this area and his commitment to standing up for families across Scotland.

"This summer, I spoke to as many people in my constituency as physically possible, and the prevailing concern is unmistakable – the cost of living crisis.

"Mortgage rates have risen, and food price inflation, boosted by Brexit, remains stubbornly high, adding pressure to households already feeling the pinch.

"As winter approaches, the energy crisis looms ever larger, and yet the UK Government has failed to announce new support measures since their previous package ended in March. I am committed to holding the Chancellor and this Government to account on these crucial issues.

"I also look forward to collaborating further with my SNP colleagues at Westminster as we tackle the UK Government's callous policies causing widespread hardship.

"Our focus will remain steadfast – championing the families and communities we serve and offering them hope for a better future with Independence."
