Highlanders have been reacting to the sudden closure of a well-established Inverness restaurant.

JP at the Castle has announced that due to "circumstances beyond our control" that it would cease trading.

The iconic The Castle restaurant was saved in November 2020 when it was taken over by the operators of the Jammy Piece, who have a presence at the Caledonian Canal.

The social media post added that it was a "very tough and difficult decision".

Since the announcement dozens of comments have been posted on community Facebook site What's Happening Inverness.

Jim Fraser said: "I'm surprised more aren't closing, the competition to try and survive between the city centre and Eastgate must be huge, just about every door you pass is selling food of some description, where do all the hungry diners come from? Especially when the city centre isn't thriving the way it used to."

While Louise Barrie said: "That’s a shame the staff were lovely and their fish and chips."

Some blamed the change of ownership and a new direction for some of the dishes on offer.

Sarah F. Cavanagh said: "Maybe if it had kept running as the Castle Street Restaurant it may have survived. Shame. It was an institution that everyone in Inverness loved."

Margaret Johnston added: "We've been going there since approx 1960, a great shame. Should never have taken away the crinkle cut chips."

Shona McCutcheon-Forbes said: "It is a shame.

"Many years ago the Castle Street Restaurant was the place to go, beautiful homemade food with no thrills and always busy for the crinkled chips, macaroni, steak pie, even the liver, onions, gravy 'n' tatties."
