An Inverness shopping institution is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

But rather than simply looking to its glorious past, John Munro Butcher also has its sights firmly set on the future.

With six shops across the Highlands, including one in Inverness’s Queensgate, the business is renowned for quality produce handled by highly skilled staff.

Anniversary celebrations are being helped along with the news that several of its staff have been nominated for the prestigious Scottish Craft Butchers Extra Mile Awards.

Jeff MacDonald from the Inverness shop has been nominated for the training mentor of the year title while colleague Jamie Bowden is up for Level 6 apprentice of the year.

Ryan Gow, who works at the firm’s Dingwall shop, has also been nominated for Level 5 apprentice of the year.

Operations director Rob Session, said: “We are big on training staff in butchery and using our own resources to do so, so it is brilliant to see our staff up for these awards.

“We are fortunate to have staff who have worked here for 40 and 50 years so they are able to pass their skills on to the next generation.

“It is a dying trade so we are keen to keep getting new people, and it is a great time for others to apply and learn.”
