Some quick thinking by mathematically talented youngsters has seen an Inverness school come out among the best in Scotland.

P6 pupils at St Joseph’s Primary took part in this year’s Sumdog Maths Challenge as part of Maths Week Scotland – with each child set a task of answering a total of 1000 questions between September 26 and 29.

A total of 6917 schools entered, but only 3821 classes qualified.

The higher the accuracy and speed, the higher the score and overall placement for participants.

Class teacher Mrs Magee said: “On Friday morning, as soon as the school gate opened, I heard a stampede of feet towards the classroom window. When I looked up there were loads of beaming faces shouting out that they came 10th overall in the competition.

“The children, who had worked so hard, showed tenacity and were so determined to finish the challenge, even though their brains were tired and fingers sore. It was amazing to see how they motivated each other and worked as a team, always encouraging each other.

“They were especially excited to hear that as a reward they would be treated to delicious pizza from ‘BICI Pizza’ in Inverness!”

The school’s P7 class came 34th in the same competition.
