Inverness youngsters get their hands on Camanachd Cup

The Camanachd Cup ­– the most prestigious cup in shinty – has been making its way around Inverness primary schools this week to inspire the next generation of players.

Youngsters in Smithton, Croy, Culloden and Crown has managed to get up close to the trophy ahead of the most important final in the shinty calendar: The Camanachd Cup Final which will see Oban Camanachd and Kingussie face off at Bught Park in Inverness on September 16.

Crown Primary's Julie Mutch, who is responsible for the school's shinty team and their training is also heavily involved in Inverness Shinty Club with her daughters playing for the women's team.

She holds popular lunchtime and after-school training sessions for P1-3 and P4-7 age ranges. She is also responsible for getting her pupils involved in various primary school tournaments.

Mrs Mutch said of the Camanachd Cup's visit: “It's like getting a visit from the World Cup of Shinty! It really is a fantastic opportunity for the children and provides them huge inspiration.”

During the visit Mrs Mutch also made sure to tell the future generation of shinty players a bit about the history of the Camanachd Cup and the longevity of competition and its link to Inverness with the very first final being held in the Highland capital in 1896.
