A young Inverness driver has been praised for achieving high marks on his advanced driving course.

Self-confessed petrolhead, Tyler Tallershall (18) recently took his advanced driving test with Highland Advanced Motorists (HiAM), becoming the youngest person to achieve a ‘F1rst’ pass with the organisation.

Having been brought up with cars and trucks as his family owned a vehicle recovery company, Tyler has always had a passion for motors.

Speaking about Tyler passing his exam, his observer, David Pittock said: “For Tyler’s age and the amount of time he’s been driving, he’s done a fantastic job.

“Normally those who do the test have got years of driving under their belt.

“Hopefully this will encourage other young drivers to do the same thing too.”

The Inverness Group of Advanced Motorists was founded in 1975 to promote Advanced Diving and it evolved into Highland Advanced Motorists (HiAM) in 2022 to reflect the number of members it has from all over the Highlands.

HiAM is affiliated to The Institute of Advanced Motorists (they now call themselves IAM RoadSmart) and provides training at an advanced level to car, motorcycle and lorry drivers and riders.

All tuition is based on the Police System of Driving and is given by local volunteers called “Observers” (used to be “instructors”). Those who are undergoing the training are referred to as “Associates”, and once they have passed the Advanced Driving/Riding Test they become “Members” of IAM RS.

Tyler has now been encouraged to undertake the training required to become an Observer and has started on the Masters programme.

Andrew Chatterton, publicity officer for HiAM added: “To encourage more young drivers and riders to undertake IAM RS training HiAM now offers bursaries to under 30 year olds – they pay the full course fee and upon successful completion HiAM gives them back 50 per cent.

“We see so many accidents around this area, and by undergoing some extra learning, it can make the world of difference.”
