An Inverness woman who loves the royal family was delighted to receive her card from the Queen as she marked her 100th birthday on Thursday.

Mary McCulloch celebrated her 100th birthday at Aden House care home in the city along with staff and family members.

Originally from Easter Ross, Mary has been in Inverness since the late 1950s and worked as a health visitor for many years before retiring.

She said she had no hidden secret to good health over the last century, but added that she was unmarried, preferring to spend time with books and friends.

Mary said: "The Queen has quite a job sending cards to folk – even the envelope is good quality. She does have a lovely signature, doesn't she?" Mary also said she thinks the Queen photographs very well, especially in cornflower blue.

Her niece added: "Mary never told her age, but now the Queen has let the cat out of the bag. Mary is very well for her age, very healthy."

Aden House staff members said: "She's a very quiet lady, fiercely independent. She can be feisty. She's lovely, quiet, well mannered and polite. She loves the royal family, likes reading and watching TV with the other residents and occasionally going out for walks."
