Inverness trio accused of attempting to rob man (71) make no plea

Two men and a woman have appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court following accusations of an assault, attempted robbery and other offences in the Highland capital.

Matthew Bell (23), Callum Ross (18) and Erin Birse (22), all from Inverness, made no plea and were committed for further examination.

Bell and Birse were released on bail and Ross was remanded in custody.

Bell and Ross were charged with assaulting a 71-year-old man in Merlewood Road, Inverness yesterday by throwing a can at his car while he was driving, throw liquid over him, repeatedly punch him on the head and legs causing him to fall to the ground, drag him from the vehicle, demand his keys, seize his mobile phone and start the engine and attempt to drive it whilst he was on top of the bonnet, all to his severe injury and did attempt to rob him of said vehicle.

They also face allegations of stealing alcohol from a nearby Scotmid shop.

Bell and Ross were also accused of assaulting a 15-year-old girl in a house in Oldtown Road, Inverness on the same date by pinning her to a sofa. Birse and Ross were charged with threatening or abusive behaviour in the same property and Birse with assaulting another female in the same location.

Ross alone is accused of another charge of uttering threats of violence on the same day towards police officers in Island Bank Road.
