An Inverness teenager who made a heartfelt plea for cash to help her undergo transitioning therapy has achieved her fundraising goal after support from Courier readers.

Rebecca Edwards (17) asked for help in last Friday’s Courier to raise £1250 to pay for transitioning gender therapy and hormone treatment. After the appeal, she wrote to the Courier to say thank you for the support she had received.

She raised £1355 after 39 people made a donation to her online crowdfunding campaign. She also received support from the LGBT community.

Without the money, she would have to wait for up to three years to attend a gender therapy clinic through the NHS.

Ms Edwards said: “I’m very happy to say that I have reached my goal. I had a large influx of donations after the article appeared online. I contacted the gender clinic on Monday and hopefully, all being well, I’ll be on my journey as soon as I can.”

In her campaign statement, Ms Edwards wrote about the need for the therapy and transitioning to help her “accept myself and truly feel right in my body”.

She said: “The waiting list for an appointment for a gender clinic is around three years which would mean I’d have to wait until my early 20s to start transitioning. I am so grateful as this is one of the first steps to who I really believe I am.”
