A SPECIAL flag-raising ceremony to mark the start of Armed Forces Week has been held inside Inverness Town House because of the wet weather.

City Provost Helen Carmichael welcomed a number of invited guests from three branches of the armed services.

She said Armed Forces Day, which takes place on Saturday, was a chance to show support to the Armed Forces community – from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.

"This is a time to reflect on the bravery and dedication of our Armed Forces and a time to show our appreciation and thank them for their service," she added.

Paul Wilson, the chairman of the Inverness branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, said showing support for the Armed Forces community provided a much-valued "morale boost" for troops and their families.

He added: "Our Armed Forces themselves couldn't do their job without the incredible support of our family and friends and I would like to give a very special thank you to them for joining us today and for the continued support you show all of us past, present and future."
