The man was seen of CCTV entering the Subway store in Inverness’s Harbour Road through a fire exit, despite having a key to the premises.

Fraser Macdonald (34) was caught on CCTV taking £20 from the till.

He then threw furniture around the store, including chairs, before putting them back in the correct place.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard the incident took place on November 25 last year and that Macdonald, of Vulcan Cottage, Muir of Ord, had no recollection of the events.

He had recently suffered a relationship break-up and had been drinking heavily.

He was seen on CCTV leaving the premises through the front door after using his key and entering a taxi.

Staff found his mobile phone the next morning.

Macdonald’s solicitor Neil Wilson said: “He throws plastic chairs about then puts them back where they should have been.

“He was having difficulties and was stressed.

“He appears to have addressed this.”

Sheriff Gary Aitken said: “This was an incredibly silly thing to do. This is not the ideal thing to have on your record. You’ve made changes to your life. I’d encourage you not to find yourself in here again.”

Macdonald was fined £600.
