A 45-year-old Nairn man who stole sandwiches from an Inverness store was quickly caught by police while still eating them nearby.

At Inverness Sheriff Court, Alan Campbell, of Moss-side Brae, admitted stealing the food from Poundland in the High Street on August 16.

He was fined £200.

His co-accused, Scott Mackay (33), of the same address, also admitted the theft of sandwiches and assaulting a police officer by kicking him on the body.

Defence solicitor Laura-Jane McFarlane said Mackay had another case calling on August 25 which would be deferred for a background report.

She said: "The report won't be available for that date. It was called for because although he has a lengthy record, he has been out of trouble for some time."

Sheriff David Sutherland deferred sentence until that date so the cases could be dealt with together.
