A DRUG addict who was caught by police with several thousand pounds worth of Class A narcotics in Inverness city centre has been jailed for a year.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that officers received information that Dean Barrow (35), of Union Street, Inverness, was in possession of the illegal substances.

Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald was told that Barrow was in Church Street on July 9, 2021 when a search was carried out.

Fiscal depute Pauline Gair said that 100 grams of cocaine was recovered with a street value of approximately £6000. In addition, 18 grams of heroin was found. The total value was £11,100 fiscal depute Susan Love said.

Barrow had previously admitted possessing the two drugs with intent to supply them. No paraphernalia, such as bags or cash, were found on him.

Sheriff Macdonald had deferred sentence for a drug treatment and testing order assessment and released Barrow on bail.

However, she warned him that her decision did not necessarily mean he would escape a jail sentence for the offence.

When he returned to learn his fate, the sheriff decided against a DTTO, saying: “Because of the high value of Class A drugs, there is no alternative but to impose a period of imprisonment.”

Barrow also admitted two further offences – one a fighting breach of the peace with another man in Church Street outside the R&B bar on September 19, 2021.

He had also pleaded guilty to shouting swearing, struggling and threatening to fight with police who had been called to Grant Street, Inverness on June 10, 2022 to deal with him.
