Customers at an Inverness supermarket were alarmed when they saw a man holding a large knife as he waited in the till queue behind them.

The incident happened on Sunday, October 30 this year in the Aldi store near Friar's Bridge when Ariel Blaszczhkawski went shopping there.

It was knocked out of his hand by witnesses and police were called, Inverness Sheriff Court was told.

Fiscal depute Shay Treanor told Sheriff Sara Matheson: "He was then heard to say 'What am I doing?, Where am I? I need help.' "

Defence solicitor David Patterson said: "He has been getting treatment and medication for alcohol abuse. But he had not taken his medication and had turned to alcohol.

"He had bought the knife in the shop and is remorseful for what happened."

Sheriff Matheson deferred sentence for a background report until December 19 when 39 year old Blaszczhkawski of Lochalsh Road, Inverness has other matters calling.
