A MOTORIST who had to pay a £250 excess and then saw his insurance premiums rocket when a disqualified driver collided with his vehicle in Nairn will be compensated for his loss.

Christopher Smith, of Church Street, Dufftown appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted driving carelessly in Nairn on June 20, 2021 by colliding with another car and driving while disqualified and uninsured.

Fiscal depute Emily Hood told Sheriff David Harvie that the total loss for the aggrieved driver was £561.48. The 32-year-old was ordered to repay that sum and banned from driving for five years.

Defence solicitor John MacColl said: “He had gone with his brother who was going to buy a vehicle. My client foolishly agreed to drive the other car back home.”

Sheriff Harvie also imposed 200 hours of unpaid work, and placed Smith under 18 months of social work supervision.
